What is the difference between staffordshire terrier and an american pit bull

I have a dog I rescued from a shelter. The dog is very protective, loyal and affectionate with family; has grown accustomed to the cats over the months and likes them but still chases, mock bites and is territorial but never growls at them but barks back if they hiss at him.

He also sleeps with the biggest one and plays with the outdoorsy one. Other dogs that are not small are not his preferred company to put it very mildly especially if the other dog is not submissive. Scares the living crap out of them though. So does the designation mean he is a pitbull mix or is the staffordshire specifically different? The American pitbull terrier and the American Staffordshire terrier are two different breeds.

The term pitbull is used for the American pitbull terrier, the American Staffordshire terrier and the Staffordshire bull terrier. However these days the term pitbull is used for any dog that looks bully. You could say a pitbull mix or American Staffordshire terrier mix.

Sounds like he has some issues that should be dealt with. Especially if he is territorial. He sounds like he could be unpredictable. Might need to visit a balanced trainer. Thank you! Where do these idiots get their misinformation? One dog,two breed names. Nope, recheck your sources.

There are several different breeds that fall under the category retriever or shepherd but you would call a golden retriever and a Labrador retriever the same dog, would you? Or in car talk you could say, pit bull is like a make, like ford Now there are different models of fords, some more similar than others, but different. This could be a useful website if statements were being supported with valid documentation. IMHO, it needs to be moderated and structured more like Wikipedia in order for the information to be useful. That way, your expertise could be better utilized for good instead of criticism.

I see a problem in this page. They are naturally friendly towards people but are extremely devoted to their owners and family whom they will defend at all costs. While the Amstaff has a reputation of being a guard dog, he is more likely to greet people with a wagging tail and lots of affection.

However, its size and look can be enough of a deterrent to keep intruders away. While a true family dog, the Amstaff needs an experienced and dedicated owner who will work and train him from a young age. While stubborn at times, these intelligent and eager to please dogs excel at obedience training. Personality-wise you can expect the American Pit Bull Terrier to be clownish, affectionate, obedient, and strong-willed.

Also naturally friendly towards people, Pits are good watchdogs, just because they are eager to greet everyone with a wagging tail. However, their courage and devotion towards their owners are unmatched and they will defend the people they love no matter what.

While they can be stubborn, Pits respond well to an assertive owner who knows how to train a dog and reinforce the rules. Early socialization and training are a must and will prevent any unwanted behaviors such as pulling on the leash and destructive chewing. These dogs are the happiest among people and can easily develop behavioral problems if they feel left out. Without human companionship and regular interaction, both breeds will exhibit some type of destructive behavior, or become depressed.

Keep in mind, that while both breeds are extremely friendly towards people, they might not be so fond of other dogs. Thus, early socialization is a must for both breeds, and it will help your dog to be less standoffish when meeting other animals.

Both the Amstaff and the American Pit Bull Terrier are generally healthy breeds that can live up to 15 years or more. However, both breeds are predisposed to some health conditions you should know about. The American Staffordshire Terrier is prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, skin allergies, hypothyroidism, heart disease, and urinary tract infections source.

Known as the Staffordshire terrier or bull and terrier, he was a welcome addition to farms and homes, where he controlled the rodent population and helped to hunt big game. The dog's fighting ability made him popular with American immigrants.

He earned his keep in American fighting pits in the late s. The Americans preferred, and bred, a larger version of the dog, who took on the name pit bull terrier, as well as American or Yankee bull terrier.

Gradually, the dogs diverged. The American pit bull terrier was the first dog registered in the UKC in It's difficult to differentiate the two dogs by appearance. Generally, the American Staffordshire is larger, weighing up to 75 pounds. The result was an agile and energetic terrier with bulldog-like perseverance and confidence. The breed was originally called the bull-and-terrier Dog, half and half, or pit dog. Eventually, it became known in England as the Staffordshire Bull terrier.

Sadly, the dogs were most commonly used for fighting; although dog fighting was banned in the United Kingdom in , it continued to flourish as the ban was difficult to enforce. The bull-and-terrier dogs came to the United States towards the end of the 19th century where they became known as pit bull terriers and then American bull terriers. Though there is some disagreement on the details, it is said that these dogs were not widely used for dog fighting like their ancestors but were more commonly used for general farm work, hunting, and companionship.

As time went on, the breed was developed into taller dogs with larger builds than their English counterparts. The breed was registered with the AKC in as the Staffordshire terrier. The name was changed in to differentiate between the shorter, smaller English version today's Staffordshire bull terrier.

Today, the two are completely separate dog breeds. The very short, smooth coat of the Am Staff requires little more than routine grooming. This breed tends to shed at a low to moderate rate. However, shedding does tend to increase seasonally.

Although some Am Staff will wear down their nails naturally from walking, most still need regular nail trims to keep their feet healthy. Give your Am Staff baths as needed to keep the skin and coat clean and healthy. The Am Staff is an athletic dog breed with plenty of energy, so routine exercise is very important. However, be cautious not to overdo it in warmer weather, as the breed may be sensitive to heat. Am Staffs will especially benefit from dog sports that challenge them mentally and physically.

Regardless of the type of exercise, be sure it is provided about twice daily or more. Without a proper outlet for all that energy, an Am Staff may become destructive, hyperactive, or develop other behavior problems.

As with any dog breed, proper training is a must. This is a fairly smart dog breed that can be stubborn, following its own will if permitted.
